SafeForPorts: Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence for port safety
We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Tenova (1) and Prosoft Intesys S.r.l. (2) on the SafeForPorts project — an initiative aimed at introducing cutting-edge innovation and frontier technologies in the port industry.
The project originated as a response to the Call for Proposals promoted by the Italian Institute of Technology (3) and RAISE Liguria (4), which led to the definition of an ambitious plan: to develop digital and intelligent solutions to enhance safety and efficiency in port cargo-handling operations, with particular attention to the protection of operators during training, operation, and maintenance activities.
Port Innovation and Industry 4.0
SafeForPorts leverages the potential of Industry 4.0 technologies, integrating virtual-reality simulators, computer-vision algorithms, and artificial-intelligence systems to create an innovative platform. The project has a dual goal:
- on the one hand, to provide immersive training tools for operators of grab ship unloaders (rail-mounted units typically installed on port quays);
- on the other, to enable on-site operational support through digital tools that assist operators during the handling and maintenance of machinery.
InformAmuse’s Role
At InformAmuse, we contribute our expertise in the design and development of:
- Voice-controlled mobile applications, ensuring hands-free interaction even in complex and noisy environments;
- Custom remote-assistance systems based on WebRTC technologies, integrable with leading market platforms;
- Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision solutions for analysing photographic material collected during inspections, automatically detecting signs of wear or anomalies on machinery.
Main Activities
Specifically, within the scope of port innovation, we will:
- customise a remote-assistance system enabling operators to contact, via hands-free devices, a remote expert who can guide them during machine handling operations;
- develop a software suite for the execution of digital workflows on wearable devices to support operational and maintenance tasks;
- define and implement AI and Computer-Vision algorithms for the automatic processing of images captured by operators, in order to detect early signs of degradation or critical anomalies.
A Special Thanks
The project also benefits from the contribution of MV Maintenance (5), which will support us with its expertise and on-site testing activities. This involvement is crucial to validate the developed solutions under real operational conditions and to ensure their practical effectiveness.
SafeForPorts is funded under the RAISE – Ecosistemi dell’Innovazione in Sicilia call (CUP: J53D23020600005, ID raise_2023_001_SafeForPorts).
